Meta HR Appointment
The other day out of the blue, I received a LinkedIn message from Meta HR saying that they wanted to talk to me to see if I was interested in learning more about their Product Manager job opportunity. Almost at the same time, I also received an interview invitation email from Meta in my inbox with a link to schedule an interview.
I clicked into the link and was well on my way to booking an e-interview in three days. Although I have no intention of jumping ship, there seems to be no reason to refuse the olive branch handed by Meta!
Meta HR Interview
The HR interview lasted about 30 minutes. It was not about technical questions, but mainly about the whole interview process and confirming some of my basic background, such as current job situation, job search intention, willingness to move to the Bay Area or Seattle, etc. The pace was relaxed and it was about 80% for HR to talk about the specific process and training. The pace was very relaxed, about 80% of the time was spent with HR talking about the process and interview training.
Specific interview process
Here is the specific interview process that HR communicated
Stage 1: Core Competency Assessment (4 rounds of 45 minutes each) This is the part that focuses on the core qualities of a Product Manager and is scheduled to be done in (Virtual Onsite) with interviewers from different teams.
First two rounds:
- Product Sense - Interview content: Deep dive into users, requirements, feature prioritization, etc. around a product or scenario - e.g., designing a new feature for Facebook Groups to increase activity. How do you think about it?
- Analytical Thinking - Interview: Understanding data metrics, hypothesis validation, A/B test design - e.g. If you find that user growth is slowing down, how would you analyze why? What kind of data do you need?
Two rounds later:
3. Repeat structure (Product Sense + Analytical thinking) The questions are similar to the previous two rounds, but more in-depth, especially the ability to follow-up and structured expression.
Stage 2: Leadership & Drive Interview (45 mins) After passing the first 4 rounds, you will go into a separate Leadership Interview, which is completely behavioral, focusing on your soft skills and teamwork.
Stage 3: Team Matching After passing the Leadership round, you will enter the final stage: Team Match - HR will recommend your resume to multiple teams based on your background and interests, and the teams may invite you to participate in an informal "chat" interview (casual call) to get to know each other, and only if both sides match will a formal offer be made! Interview Preparation Tips
1. If you are an SDE, you should limit your practice time to 15 minutes for each coding question, which is moderately difficult. When practicing, simulate handwriting code in a Google Doc or whiteboard scenario and dictate your thought process.
2. Read Meta's Job Interview Preparation Manual, try to abstract common applications into system design questions and practice framing the questions, prepare a few concrete examples and practice telling your impact, results and lessons learned.
