Recently accompanied a classmate after brushing Optiver 2026 Online Assessment, the whole process consists of four major modules:Quantitative Research Test, Beat the Odds Probability, Number Logic Test, Zap-N.
The overall pace was fast, the number of questions was high, and the thinking was demanding, but instead of going for fancy algorithms, the candidates were tested on their logical rigor, reaction time, and mathematical intuition. Here's the full replay and lessons learned.

Quantitative Research Test

This section is the centerpiece of the entire OA, with 3 questions (2 Programming + 1 Approximate Solution) and a time limit of 90 minutes. The questions were mostly on DP (Dynamic Programming), heap (priority queue), simulation, and mathematical modeling.

  1. Portfolio Optimization
    Given a set of assets, each with expected return and risk, select a subset maximizing the Sharpe ratio under given constraints.
    Focus. dynamic programming, constraint optimization, time complexity control.
  2. Trade Matching System
    Simulate a continuous double auction order book. Given buy/sell orders with prices and quantities, match trades and compute the final PnL.
    Focus. heap (priority queue), hashmap, event simulation.
  3. Approximate Solution - Path Probability Simulation
    Given a stochastic grid with transition probabilities, estimate the path with maximum expected value. Exact solution is infeasible - use approximation methods.
    Focus. greedy heuristic, Monte Carlo sampling, simulated annealing.

Preparation Tips:

  • First, quickly determine whether it can be solved violently; if not, then consider DP or heap;
  • Approximate Solution focuses on "rational thinking + simulation logic", and code runnability is the most critical;
  • Time is of the essence, so be sure to keep the structure intact for 90 minutes;
  • Python/C++ heapq,deque,defaultdict and other high-frequency data structures.

Beat the Odds Probability

common 30 probability questions, 90 seconds each, questions provide comprehensive coverage of probability theory and expected value. Examines computational speed and basic mastery.

Example Problems

  • Two Dice Sum Probability
    Find the probability that the sum of two dice equals a target number.
  • Expected Value of a Betting Game
    Compute expected gain given payout odds and probability of winning.
  • Conditional Probability

Tips:

  • Don't waste time writing long formulas, do quick math when you can;
  • Focus on mastery:
  • Use enumeration + exclusion more often, especially in combined events;
  • Familiarity with common distributions (Binomial / Geometric / Normal) helps with second solutions.

Number Logic Test

This part of the test is "Finding patterns", 26 questions in 25 minutes, no calculators allowed, only paper reasoning.
It is a pure pattern recognition question and is easy to fall in the time pit.

  • 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, ?
  • 4, 9, 16, 25, ?

Tips:

  • Common patterns: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, squaring, prime numbers, difference, repetition;
  • If you're not sure, just skip the question and don't waste your time;
  • Do familiar questions first and then go back and fill in at the end;
  • It is recommended to brush up on pattern recognition and number series.

Zap-N

Finally, there is the Reaction Mini-Games module, which consists of 9 levels that examine reaction speed, short-term memory, and attention switching.

  • Reaction delay task

Tips:

  • A sense of rhythm is most important, don't get carried away by the speed;
