Apple The interview atmosphere was a bit different from what I imagined - there was no strong sense of pressure, but the questions were hidden deep pits, testing logic and details. My VO round was for the Data Scientist position, and the whole process lasted half a day and was divided into several different modules, with each interviewer coming from a different team, including those with engineering backgrounds and those with pure product analysis backgrounds.

Each round has different interviewers, some are technical, some are product-oriented, and some are in team management roles. apple's interview process emphasizes the ability to think along the entire chain, not only to test whether you can solve problems, but also to test whether you can explain the logic behind it and predict the possible business impacts.
Interview process in detail
Round 1: Python Coding Challenge
The interviewer is a senior data engineer, first exchanged pleasantries, then directly shared an online coding environment. The background of the question is iOS application crash log analysis, the data contains timestamp, device_type, app_version, crash_count etc. fields.
Question.
"Given a dataset of iPhone app crash logs with timestamps, app versions, and device types, write a function to identify the top 3 device types with the highest crash rate in the last 30 days."
After I wrote the first version of the code, the interviewer immediately followed up:
- If the amount of data is large, will your code be OOM (memory overflow)? How to optimize it?
- If the log data is updated incrementally every day, how would you rewrite the function to support streaming?
- If the sample size for a device_type is small, does the ranking still make sense?
This round made me realize that Apple is particularly focused on engineering scalability and data reliability, not just running through, but being stable, scalable, and interpretable.
Round 2: SQL + Data Analysis Case
This interviewer, who obviously works with product data, started by giving me a simplified version of the App Store download log sheet downloads:
user_id | country | app_id | timestamp
The data is for the past year and the task is to write SQL to find the 5 countries with the fastest growing downloads and explain why.
Question.
"Write a query to find the top 5 countries by download growth rate in the last quarter, and discuss what factors could explain these trends. "
I use CTE to aggregate by quarter, then calculate the growth rate, and finally sort to take the top five. After writing it, the interviewer immediately moved to analyzing it:
- If a country has an exceptionally high growth rate, what are the possible reasons? (marketing campaigns, new equipment launches, price adjustments, etc.)
- How would you explain it if downloads were up but retention was down?
- How can you validate your assumptions with SQL?
Here I sense that Apple places a lot of emphasis on the business interpretation of data results, and that SQL is just the starting point; the focus is on being able to come up with actionable insights based on the results.
Round 3: Product Sense + Experiment Design
This round was a product manager interview, which was slow and clear, but with super open questions.
Question.
"Apple is considering adding a 'battery health prediction' feature to iOS. How would you design an experiment to measure its impact on user satisfaction and device upgrade rates? to measure its impact on user satisfaction and device upgrade rates?"
I defined primary metrics (user satisfaction survey, upgrade conversion rate), secondary metrics (frequency of use, length of time spent on features, etc.), and then designed the A/B test scenario. The interviewer then followed up with questions:
- How do you balance sample size and statistical significance if testing time is limited?
- If the experiment results in an increase in satisfaction but a decrease in escalation rates, would you recommend going live?
- Are there any other validation methods besides A/B testing?
This round made me realize that Apple's product thinking is about data + user experience, not just about what's right or wrong, but also about long-term brand value.
Round 4: Behavioral
The last round was talking to a team director and was more about culture fit.
Question.
"Tell me about a time when you had to persuade a senior stakeholder to change their decision based on your analysis."
He especially likes to dig deep into details like:
- What was the conflict of interest at the time?
- What data visualizations or metrics did you use to convince them?
- What are the long-term implications of this decision?
Apple's standards for behavioral facets are high. It's not enough to simply tell a story, it has to be backed up by quantitative data, and it has to demonstrate cross-sectoral impact.
