Phone Screen
Interviewer: A Senior Associate
The opening was a standard self-introduction, and I was pretty well prepared and talked about my background for about 2 minutes.
Then the interviewer asked a few BEHAVIORAL questions:
"Tell me about a time when you had to work with incomplete data."
I talked about a project I encountered during my internship, when the client gave me data with a lot of missing values, and how I dealt with it. The interviewer listened very carefully and asked a few follow-up questions like "How did you communicate this uncertainty to stakeholders?"
The next one is a mini case about a retail company that wants to optimize their inventory management, which is not very complicated and mainly focuses on logical thinking. I remember I drew a simple framework to analyze the case from several perspectives, including demand forecasting, supply chain, and cost optimization. The interviewer would guide me at the right time, such as "That's a good point. What other factors might affect demand?"
The last 10 minutes was my time to ask questions. I asked about the difference between BCG X and traditional BCG, and the career path for new grad.
The interviewer answered in detail and offered to share her own experience.
When she hung up she said, "I really enjoyed our conversation. You should hear back within a week." The tone sounded positive.
Final Round
Format: 3 consecutive rounds of 45 minutes each
Round 1: Case Interview
Case was about a healthcare startup trying to enter a new market. I remember asking a few clarifying questions first:
- "What type of healthcare services do they provide?"
- "Are we looking at domestic or international expansion?"
- "What's their current financial situation?"
The interviewer was very patient in answering the questions and encouraged me by saying "Good question" at the right time.
I used the standard FRAMES for market entry: market attractiveness, competitive landscape, company capabilities.
While analyzing the market size, Principal suddenly asks, "How would you actually estimate the market size for this specific service?"
I was a bit nervous here because I had to do some calculations, and I wrote down my assumptions on the whiteboard and derived them step by step. He would occasionally nod or say "Interesting approach".
The most CHALLENGING part was when he asked, "Given the data we've discussed, what would be your recommendation?" and I needed to string together all the previous analyses to I need to string together all the previous analysis and give a CLEAR recommendation.
Round 2: Case Interview
He gave me a real business scenario: an e-commerce company wants to improve their recommendation system, and then asked me how I would approach the problem.
I started with problem definition and talked about the steps of data collection, feature engineering, and model selection. He would interrupt from time to time to ask for some technical details:
- "What metrics would you use to evaluate the model?"
- "How would you handle cold start problem?"
- "What about scalability concerns?"
The most interesting thing was that he asked me to draw the whole system architecture on the whiteboard, and I drew the data pipeline, model training, real-time serving, and other components. he would look at me and occasionally say "What about He would look at me and occasionally say, "What about this part?" and point to a component.
In the second half he opened the laptop and showed me some Python code and asked me what was wrong with this code. It was a data preprocessing script, and I found a couple of POTENTIAL issues, like not handling missing values, and a logic error.
Round 3: Behavioral + Culture Fit with Partner
The final round was with Partners and the atmosphere was relatively relaxed.
He asked a lot of questions about WHY BCG X:
- "What attracts you to consulting?"
- "How do you see technology changing the consulting industry?"
- "Tell me about a time when you had to influence someone without authority."
What I remember most was when he asked, "Describe a situation where you had to learn something completely new under pressure."
I talked about my experience learning a new framework in a hackathon. He listened attentively and asked some FOLLOW-UP questions about my learning process.
Finally he asked, "Do you have any concerns about joining BCG X?" The question was quite UNEXPECTED, and I was honest about my concerns about work-life balance. He appreciated my honesty and shared some of his perspectives.
A few small interview details
- Every interviewer spends a few minutes reviewing my resume before they start.
- They were very focused on my THOUGHT PROCESS, not just the final answer!
- In the Technical round, the interviewer will give hints if I stuck
- Everyone was on time and the schedule was well-organized.
Practical Tips
- Case prep is important: although there is a tech component, case interview logic is still the core
