First Round: Case Interview

The first round of interview was 45 minutes long, the first 15 minutes was to introduce myself and explain a project from my resume. The next Case was about a healthcare startup wanting to enter a new market.

Clarify questions

  1. "What type of healthcare services do they provide?"
  2. "Are we looking at domestic or international expansion?"
  3. "What's their current financial situation?"

The interviewer was very patient in answering the questions and encouraged me by saying "Good question" at the right time.

Problem-solving process

I used the standard framework for market entry: market attractiveness, competitive landscape, and firm capabilities. When analyzing market size, Principal popped in and asked, "How would you actually estimate the size of the market for this particular service?"

I was a little nervous because I needed to do some calculations. I wrote down my assumptions on the whiteboard and progressed step by step. He would occasionally nod his head or say, "Interesting way to do it".

The most challenging part was when he asked, "Given the data we've discussed, what would you recommend?" I needed to tie all the previous analysis together and give a clear recommendation.

Round 2: Technical Deep Dive with Senior Manager

He gave me a real business scenario: an e-commerce company wanted to improve their recommendation system. He asked me how I would solve this problem.

I started with defining the problem and talked about the steps of data collection, feature engineering, and model selection. He interrupted me from time to time to ask for some technical details:

  1. "What type of healthcare services do they provide?"
  2. "Are we looking at domestic or international expansion?"
  3. "What's their current financial situation?"

The most interesting part was that he asked me to draw the whole system architecture on the whiteboard. I drew components such as data pipelines, model training, and real-time services. He watched me draw and occasionally asked, "What about this component?" And then pointed to a component.

In the second half, he opened his laptop and showed me a piece of Python code and asked what was wrong with it. It was a data preprocessing script, and I found a couple of potential problems, such as not handling missing values and a logic error.

Round 3: Behavioral + Culture Fit with Partner

The final round was with Partners and the atmosphere was relatively relaxed.

  1. "What attracts you to consulting?"
  2. "How do you see technology changing the consulting industry?"
  3. "Tell me about a time when you had to influence someone without authority."

What I remember most was when he asked, "Describe a situation where you had to learn something completely new under pressure."

I talked about my experience learning a new framework at a hackathon. He listened attentively and followed up with some details about my learning process.

Finally, he asked, "Do you have any concerns about joining BCG X?" This question was quite unexpected, and I honestly voiced my concerns about work-life balance. He appreciated my candor and shared some of his thoughts.
